We are proud to announce that for the FIRST time in Miami Club Tennis history, we will be going to NATIONALS!!
Sectionals took place this past weekend, where the top five teams earned a bid to Nationals. There were 32 teams playing for the five spots to Nationals. The team we sent was made up of Sydney Reichert, Sammud Sharma, Brett Schubert, Akhil Kanagaraj, Nayana Ravishankar, Ellen Hata, and Nick Ruth.
In the pool made up of OU, Illinois, and Wisconsin B, Miami was given the second seed. The first match in pool play was on Friday against Wisconsin and it was won pretty easily. After a very short break, OU was the next opponent and beaten again fairly easily. The team was looking in good shape. Friday night was the last pool play match and against a tough Illinois team. A well fought match, left Illinois with the win. These results placed Miami into the gold bracket for Saturday.
On Saturday bracket play began against Marquette. This match was very close, but our team was able to pull through with a victory. Next came the big match, the match that determined if Miami would go to Nationals or fall being so close to the opportunity. Toledo was a very strong opponent, keeping it close with everyone on the edge of their seats. Going into mixed, Miami was up by one game. Up 5-2 in mixed, match point came and Miami won it. Everyone was freaking out, MIAMI WAS GOING TO NATIONALS, a moment that nobody would forget! Qualifying for Nationals finally was achieved after the many years of tennis being a club sport! Saturday ended with a loss to Wisconsin A, who ended finishing second overall. On Sunday the final match was for 3rd or 4th place, a rematch against Illinois. It was close, but after a good fight, Miami earned 4th place.
Overall it was an AMAZING weekend! Miami finished in the top 4 along with Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois. The team also won $500 to help fund the trip to Nationals!
The team is so excited to travel to Orlando April 13-15. They will represent Miami well in our FIRST ever trip to Nationals. If you see any of the team tell them congrats on making Club Tennis history, and wish them luck in Nationals!
