This past weekend our team competed in the USTA Tennis On Campus Nationals. This was the first time in club history that our team qualified! The tournament was held at the brand new USTA campus in Orlando, Florida with the top 64 club teams of the nation. On Thursday the team started pool play. Placed in a tough pool, Miami was placed in the Bronze bracket after beating University of Rhode Island, and losing to Gonzaga University and University of Central Florida. On Friday, bracket play began. First match was against Oregon University. After a hard fight, we lost by 1 game (21-22). The next match was against UT Austin, another difficult opponent, who barely beat us (22-25). The day ended with a loss to University of Tennesee. Last match for Miami's first time at Nationals was early Saturday morning against New Mexico and we won. For our first appearance, we ended in the Bronze bracket. Congrats and great job to the team that represented Miami well! Hopefully next year we return and improve our standing.
We would also like to thank our senior, Sydney Reichert for her years of playing and serving as President. She has done a lot for our organization and has helped the team win throughout our tournaments. We love you Syd!
Also, thank you to the photographers at the event for some of the pictures below!
This past weekend the team traveled to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to compete in the Illini Invite. Our team consisted of Sydney Reichert, Gabby Verdin, Ellen Hata, Sam Sharma, Akhil Kanagaraj, Nick Ruth, and Noah Fox. There were a total of 16 teams at the tournament. Each pool consisted of 4 teams. Our pool was consisted of us, Iowa State, Wash U, and Michigan State. Pool play began Friday night and continued into Saturday. The team played well and defeated all of the teams in the pool to give us a top seed in the gold bracket. On Sunday bracket play began and Miami played UC. After a hard fought match, we lost in a tiebreaker. The team then went into the backdraw, and beat Ohio State to earn 5th place in the tournament. The team looks forward to the next tournament in Michigan, to hopefully bring back the title!
This past weekend the team traveled to Ohio State University to compete in the first tournament of the year. The following members went to OSU to represent Miami: Sydney Reichert, Gabby Verdin, Sam Sharma, Akhil Kanagaraj, Nick Ruth, Brett Schubert, Haley Thoresen, and Ally Bucher. The team arrived in Columbus Friday night and settled in the hotel to be well-rested for the next day.
On Saturday, pool play began indoors at the Jesse Owens Tennis Center. Pool B consisted of Miami University, Ohio State University (Scarlet), University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and University of Cincinnati. The first opponent was University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Due to it being the first match of the season, the team started off slow and lost a close match to the panthers. There was no time to think about the loss though because a tough OSU team was the next opponent. There was no fooling around in this match, with both doubles and men's singles winning their matches. Up by eleven games going into mixed, Miami saw the win at their fingertips, but a strong mixed OSU team stood in their way. Miami lost the mixed doubles set, but stopped the rally to win the whole match. Miami beat the OSU A team by 7 games! This concluded day one of play, and put the team in a good position to compete for first place.
On Sunday, the pool play finished with Miami playing University of Cincinnati. Just like the OSU match, Miami won both doubles and men's singles. The team was up going into mixed doubles. Mixed was victorious, putting Miami into the finals! The finals was against school rival, Ohio University. Similar to past matches, the team played well during doubles and singles, giving them the lead going into mixed doubles. OU came out wanting to creep back up in the score and won the set. With a rain cloud in the distance, the team knew they needed to win quickly to get that first place spot. A light rain began, but nothing could get in the way of going home with the trophy. Mixed doubles held their serve to give Miami their first tournament win of the season!
The Ohio State Open is just the beginning for this club team. With a first place finish at the first tournament of the year, the future is looking bright! Next weekend the team will be traveling to the Illini Invite to hopefully continue playing well, and maybe bring home another trophy. Wish them luck!
